What program do you use for this? I've tried doing something similar on photoshop but can never get the right effect

Photoshop - normal brush (the top one on the list), opacity about 30-70 (change it often depending what you're doing), flow about 60, change the size often to do the details or the large swathes of shading!

No matter how often I used to draw horses, they're still a pain to me, especially drawing with no refs AND with more frontal view. And you pulled it off nicely : )

Really nice form. Reminds me of the style of a Mongolian artist nameed Ganbat, loose but accurate, thick with form.

If I may ask, what's that sliver of dark near the horn? It looks like a gash but doesn't read completely like one...
