Irish Sports Horse by howlinghorse Irish Sports Horse by howlinghorse
Digital drawing for ~SuttonCF who gave me this! [link] Hope you like 'im :)

I tried to do an Irish Sports Horse... I don't know any in real life so its hard for me, I do know they have the thicker necks and yet high TB withers, and are good at jumping.

Umm. By any random chance does anyone want to trade drawing knowledge for horse breed anatomy knowledge? lol I've been trying to figure it out for ages and I can only just about do obvious arabs, tekes and heavy horses (all lumped together, of course) :XD:

To be honest, my fellow equine artist, the best way is indeed to simply study the bone structure of the spesific horse breed you wish to capture on paper/screen.

That really worked well for me, and for the record, since I have no idea how to do digital art, this is fantastic. :)

I am a near-rabid collector of reference images (of course when I have dozens of magazines and catalogs spread about the floor with mounds of paper, paste, and scissors and blades to cut them out my husband things I am actually rabid *laughs*). I have several folders worth of images of various breeds and poses. I would highly recommend starting your own collection, be it physical folders or digital ones.

Apart from collecting horse breed books and amassing many images of different horses through other means as well I would also highly recommend the book "The Horse Conformation Handbook" by Heather Smith Thomas. It goes into great detail about horse anatomy, conformation, as well as the characteristics of types and breeds.

I currently have a tutorial-in-progress, but I fear it'll take me a while to get to the breed portion of it!

It really does come down to the principle tenets of drawing: Observation and Repetition!

I really like the use of negative space and the lines formed by the horses body in this one as well as the contrast and range of tone. Another already pointed out the shoulder area as being problematic, but it isn't really because it is short, it is more like you have his forearm directly connected to the shoulder rather than having the shoulder to arm and then foreleg. Redline for a better idea of what I'm talking about: [link]

This is beautiful, but I work with horses, and as to the anatomy: the only problem that jumps out to me is that this horses shoulders are too small in proportion to the rest or its body, and the nostrils are too close to the horses lips. Good job though.

Well I think you've definitely achieved your aim of a thicker neck; it looks wonderfully strong!! Overall a fantastic drawing that's beautifully rendered :)
